Software Development Manager, Alexa Smart Home

The Amazon Devices team develops the newest components into the operating systems, cloud services and mobile applications that power Amazon devices (Echo, Plug, FireTV, Kindle, etc.). We are looking for a Software Development Manager (SDM) to make bringing smart devices into your home a magical experience.

We are looking for Software Development Managers that work well both in a start-up environment while working on systems with infinite scale. You will be influencing the direction of our technology that impacts hundreds of millions of customers around the world. You can expect to hire, lead and build teams that work on some of the most complex challenges in large-scale computing. Key job responsibilities

• Develop and manage teams that work on front-end and back-end software including cloud services
• Work with senior leaders on a vision and technical strategy
• Work closely with the engineers to build the best technical design and approach
• Mentor & grow engineers across the team, insisting on high standards
• Manage the day-to-day activities of the engineering team within an Agile/Scrum environment and collaborate with partner teams
• Report on status of development, quality, operations, and system performance
• Develop tools & processes to enable best-in-class operations for our services for Amazon and 3rd Party devices

This position includes working closely with product management and peer SDMs.

Basic Qualifications

• 7+ years of engineering experience
• 3+ years of engineering team management experience
• 8+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
• Experience building web applications with React and modern web technologies
• Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
• Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
• Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
