Position Overview

We're hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to join Prepared's Assistive Dispatch team, focused on building systems that ingest, process, and analyze real-time radio communications for 911 centers.

This role sits at the intersection of backend engineering and edge computing , helping bridge physical dispatch center infrastructure with our cloud platform. You’ll work on a fast-growing, early-stage product with real customer demand, tackling complex integration challenges across diverse hardware and network environments.

This is a high-impact opportunity for someone who enjoys working across the stack — from device-level systems to cloud services — and thrives in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment.

This is a hybrid role , with an expectation of four days per week in our Manhattan office.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and scale systems that ingest and process real-time radio traffic from dispatch centers
• Develop software that runs on both edge devices (on-prem hardware) and cloud backend systems
• Design and implement integration pipelines across a wide variety of hardware and network configurations
• Help standardize and scale device-to-cloud data flows across multiple integration paths
• Debug and support deployments in real-world environments
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product and customers to iterate quickly and deliver value
• Take ownership of projects end-to-end, from scoping through production rollout

What Make You a Great Fit

• 5+ years of software engineering industry experience
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience
• Proficiency in or eagerness to learn our backend stack (Ruby on Rails, Golang)
• Experience and comfort with making basic frontend changes (React preferred)
• Experience building systems that connect edge devices to cloud infrastructure
• Background in one or more of:
• Edge computing
• Embedded systems
• Comfortable working in fast-paced, ambiguous environments with evolving requirements
• High ownership mindset — able to drive projects independently
• Interest in solving complex, real-world integration problems

Bonus (optional)

• Prior experience as an embedded engineer or working closely with embedded systems
• Familiarity with networking fundamentals (protocols, debugging, infrastructure concepts)
• Experience with real-time systems, streaming, or audio processing
• Background working on IoT, hardware integrations, or distributed systems
• Experience integrating LLMs into cloud applications

The Pay: Axon is a total compensation company, meaning compensation is made up of base pay, bonus, and stock awards. The starting base pay for this role is between USD 141,000 in the lowest geographic market and USD 216,600 in the highest geographic market. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: level, function, training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs, geographic market, and often a combination of all these factors. Base Pay Range

$141,000 — $216,600 USD
