The General Practitioner is responsible for leading and managing the delivery of high-quality primary healthcare services to immigration detainees within the detention centre.
This position requires a strong foundation in general practice and primary healthcare, supported by specialised knowledge of the unique health needs that arise within the detention environment. The GP must be equipped to manage a wide range of complex presentations, including mental health conditions, substance use issues, and trauma-related health concerns whilst maintaining high quality and comprehensive medical records.
A key responsibility of the role is to provide clinical oversight and to act as the primary medical escalation point for health staff working within the immigration detention centre. No billing or Medicare administration required - so you can focus on what you do best: caring for patients.

To be considered for this role, you must hold a medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) and have full registration with the Medical Board of Australia, without restrictions. Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), or equivalent substantial clinical practice experience is essential.
You will have demonstrated capability in managing mental health and alcohol or other drug concerns. This includes an understanding of the impacts of acute, chronic, and complex trauma on physical and psychological health, and the ability to provide safe, trauma-informed care within a high-risk and high-stress setting. Authorisation as an opioid substitution treatment prescriber is mandatory, or a willingness to obtain authorisation. You should also have knowledge and experience in managing public health issues, particularly communicable diseases, and a strong understanding of the needs of vulnerable populations.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to work collaboratively and effectively within a multidisciplinary team. A strong commitment to continuous improvement, reflective practice, and maintaining high clinical standards is also required. You must demonstrate a clear understanding of ethical considerations and confidentiality in healthcare delivery and be able to navigate and adapt to a complex and challenging healthcare environment.
